Negation: la collana italiana che prometteva galassie

Negation: The Italian Series That Promised Galaxies

Have you ever encountered a comic series that promised so much, but ended too soon? This is the case of the Italian series Negation , published in 2004 and then discontinued after just a few issues: a real opportunity for collectors and curious readers.

What is "Negation" about?

The Negation series was born as an Italian translation/adaptation of an American title from CrossGen Entertainment. Written by Mark Waid and Tony Bedard, with art by Paul Pelletier.
In short, Negation tells the story of a universe where antagonists—called Negation—have invaded galactic domains, and the human resistance fights to survive and regain freedom. The protagonist (originally English) is involved in desperate missions in a science fiction/space setting, with plots that combine war, interstellar politics, sacrifice, and rebellion. In Italy, it was published in a 16 x 25 cm stapled format, starting with the first issue in January 2004.

Why did it “disappear”?

The Italian series has some curious and somewhat unfortunate traits:

  • In Italy only 6 issues (numbers 1/6) were released between January 2004 and July 2005.
  • It is indicated that the final American issues (up to #25/27) would remain unpublished in Italy, so the Italian series did not complete the planned narrative cycle.
  • Publisher Dream Colors, which took over the series after an original Lexy run, admitted in an interview that it was in a difficult market and that distributing/releasing the imported comic presented “risks.”
  • Current availability of issues is very limited, with only a few copies in stock online.
All this leads us to think that the series did not have satisfactory sales or that there were editorial/distribution problems that blocked its continuation.

What makes «Negation» interesting today

  • It's a discontinued series, so everything ever released has "niche" collector value.
  • It is part of the larger CrossGen universe, which was imported to Italy in a fragmented way: this generates curiosity about what it could have become.
  • The publication context (bookshop/stapled in Italy, small publisher) makes it a “hidden treasure”.
  • For a newsagent or retailer, offering the complete series 1-6 or explaining its interrupted history can attract readers looking for rarities or “completed (or almost) series”.

Some quick "fact sheets" of Italian numbers

  1. Negation #1 – Jan 2004
  2. Negation #2 – April 2004
  3. Negation #3 – July 2004
  4. Negation #4 – October 2004
  5. Negation #5 – February 2005
  6. Negation #6 – July 2005

As you can see, the release is not perfectly monthly and there is already a significant gap between numbers 4 and 5, perhaps indicating that something was wrong with the regularity.

The Negation series is a perfect example of a "series that could have been," but wasn't entirely... at least in Italy. For passionate readers, collectors, and comic book store/newsstand owners, it's a title worth noting: the story is compelling, the target audience is science fiction and intergalactic sagas enthusiasts, and the fact that it's discontinued adds an extra appeal to finding the issues.
If you encounter it, perhaps in its entirety, you are in the presence of something worth telling... and preserving.
